VideoRay ROV Tether

VideoRay tether is undoubtedly one of the most important and hardest working pieces of the ROV system. Only the highest quality, most rugged materials and underwater connectors available go into our tethers to ensure their durability. All VideoRay tether is mateable and compatible which supports our modular approach to delivery. Most systems come with multiple segments of tether, enabling you to reach your desired depth and providing redundancy for your operations. Limiting your ROV to one long continuous length of tether can put your mission in jeopardy – sharp rocks, vessel propellers, and metal structures love to chew up and sever tether. Having multiple segments on hand ensures that your mission can continue even if part of your tether becomes damaged or destroyed. As an additional layer of protection, the VideoRay Pro 4 Cockpit Software includes a turn counter widget to help you monitor your tether’s position and ensure that it does not tangle or knot itself.

VideoRay has a variety of tether diameters, buoyancies, and lengths available. Smaller diameter tether means less drag in the water and less effort needed by the operator to hold the sub in place, no matter the size or power of your ROV. Different buoyancies help in different situations. For shallow dives, any of the neutrally buoyant tethers will suffice while a combination of negative and neutral is usually employed for deep dives down to 305 m (1,000 ft). Advanced tether rigging for challenging dives is covered in our Open Enrollment Training Courses.

Most VideoRay ROV Configurations are delivered with one of our Tether Deployment Systems (TDS) – tether management cases designed to store, manually payout, and retrieve your tether while keeping it protected and clean. Both our Standard and Extended TDS cases have a retractable handle and wheels for easy transportation and consist of rugged Pelican 1620 hard cases with custom slip rings, manual winch handles, and 4.5 m (15 ft) leads of tether to the Control Panel.

VideoRay uses the finest underwater mateable connectors available in our tethers. Along with these connections, steel strain relief cables, all copper conductors, and a Kevlar member built into the tether, VideoRay tether can handle quite a bit of abuse. Operators have lifted objects over 45 kg (100 lb) by attaching the VideoRay ROV’s manipulator arm and hauling the sub in by the tether.

VideoRay tether comes in a variety of standard precut lengths. Custom tether lengths are also available.
